Route description
This is an incredible crossing through the remote valleys of the upper reaches of the Muga, dominated by the high peak of Bassegoda, and the Albanyà area which drives a kind of wedge from the west and opens up a passageway between Alta Garrotxa, to the south, and Vallespir, in north Catalonia, marking the border with France. We will discover part of the L’Alt Empordà area and some border villages. This route is remarkable for its historical importance and places of great natural interest. The starting point is Lladó, a little village called the Balcony of L’Empordà for its incredible view of the area. We will cross the reservoir of Boadella and the Cova de la Pólvora (cave of gunpowder). We will visit the medieval village of Maçanet de Cabrenys and the shelter of Les Salines (the Saltworks), which belongs to the same town and has great forests and fresh water springs. Finally, we will arrive at El Pertús, an unusual border neighbour of the French town La Jonquera, where we will visit one of the few Catalan fortresses. We will sleep in Family-run hotels, located in a privileged natural environment, which offer a friendly service.
