/ SEA & MOUNTAIN / ROUTE OF THE BLUNDERBUSS / WINES AND OILS OF L’EMPORDÀ / CYCLING TOUR : SALVADOR DALI / DISCOVERING THE SWEETEST COSTA BRAVA / THE ROAD OF SANT JAUME THROUGH THE LANDS OF GIRONA
Route description
This is a circular route around the Baix Empordà area, where the mountains, coast and plains all meet. The historical and cultural heritage of these lands is evident, especially in the medieval villages. From Girona, the city of stone, we will follow the ‘Green Way’ (the route of the old steam train) to the sea. We will then follow the coast to the busiest port of the Costa Brava in Palamós, before arriving at the beautiful village of L’Escala, crossing its fortified walls. We will stop in La Bisbal, the capital of the Baix Empordà, an interesting cultural & gastronomic city. We will get to the heart of this area visiting medieval villages, and we will go up to the castle standing at 309 m.above sea level with some spectacular views of all the Empordà and the Medes Islands. We will visit the ruins of the Grecoroman city of Empúries and Sant Martí, inhabited from the century VII aC, and the Nature Reserve of Aiguamolls de L´Empordà. The Baix Empordà is a place of great natural importance and it is protected by the Plan of Natural Spaces, which covers 33% of the territory. We will see all this human and natural wealth in a relaxed manner and we will be able to visit different points of landscape and cultural interest by bicycle. We will sleep in nice well situated hotels on the Costa Brava, where we will be able to take it easy and enjoy the beach.
